Tactical Land Care (TLC) began as Tactical Solutions Lawn Care and was originally founded by Cory Middleton. Cory grew up working on a tobacco farm. He began mowing lawns at a very young age, joining his step-father in the family’s small business, Bud’s Service Lawn Cutting. While at Salisbury University, Cory earned his commission as an officer in the United States Army. Shortly after, he was deployed overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned to Northern Virginia in 2013, committed to applying a military approach to the lawn care industry. After a few strategy brainstorming sessions with his childhood best friend, Patrick Moran, Tactical Solutions Lawn Care LLC was born in 2013.
Patrick Moran grew up in Alexandria, Va, spending his days exploring his Mother’s vegetable, herb, and flower, which grew over the years to fill up the neighboring lot. He loved being outside, something that holds true to today. In 2000, Patrick moved to St. Mary’s Maryland. There he spent his time exploring the banks of the Patuxent River. He personally witnessed the power of erosion as the Patuxent River shifed more than 20 ft towards their home in the 4 5 years he, his mother, and sister lived there. After countless weekends, afternoons, and evenings exploring the shore, the marsh and adjacent wood, Patrick too came to understand what a native plant and animal ecology can look like when able to thrive.
Patrick attended Chopticon High School where we met Cory Middleton. The two of them would go on to compete in football, wrestling, and track and field together. Patrick’s summers were spent completing internships at Pax River Naval Base and working at Meadow’s Farm Nursery. At Meadow’s, Patrick’s love for plants grew into a passion. He would rescue flowers, shrubs, and trees from the clearance section weekly, bringing them back to their home in Leonardtown, where he would design landscapes, hardscapes, and waterscapes around their acre and a half yard where the struggling plants could hopefully find a new home and thrive.
Patrick graduated from Chopticon and went on to attend Yale University, intending to balance playing Division I football, and obtaining a degree in Green Architecture. Once football started, Patrick’s focus shifted to the love of football with its physicality, time outdoors, team-environment and competitiveness. Patrick shifted his academic focus to study Political Science, with coursework in studying the natural world and climate change. Meanwhile, he set a goal to following his grandfather’s footsteps in playing professional football. The dream was short-lived when he was released after Rookie Camp with the Baltimore Ravens. His NFL dreams were over, and they were soon after replaced with an entreprenurial fervor.
In 2013, Patrick founded Fitizen, a non-profit committed to community-based holistic fitness. He oversawPatrick Moran supports Balance Paddleboarding in an advisory capacity as Managing Director of Moran Strategy Group, an Alexandria-based consulting firm that specializes in Business Performance Management and Start-Up Advisory Services. Patrick has always been passionate about the health of the Potomac River and the opportunity for social enterprise to protect it and other natural resources. Patrick graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He also is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
In 2016, Patrick Moran, joined Cory and began directing the day-to-day operations. Patrick brought his professional experience as a Project Manager and business consultant. This operational experienced, paired with his passion for the outdoors ever since working at Meadows Farms Nursery as a teenager, resulted in the notable growth of the business. In 2017, Cory sold his stake in the partnership to Patrick who continued to manage Tactical’s operations.
In 2017 and 2018, Patrick obtained Virginia licenses as a Class C Landscape Services Contractor (LSC), Home Improvement Contractor (HIC), and Maryland Home Improvement, which enabled Tactical Land Care built upon its successful performance in landscape maintenance services to develop greater experience and skill in landscape construction projects.
Today, Tactical leads the way in offering environmentally responsible landscape design, construction, and maintenance services. Team Tactical takes pride in opening a new front in the fight against climate change by enabling property owners and managers the opportunity to mobilize their property by adopting strategies that reduce stormwater runoff, sequester carbon, reduce carbon footprints.
