Tactical Land Care

TLC, Tactical Land Care began as Tactical Solutions Lawn Care LLC and was originally founded by Cory Middleton. Cory grew up working on a tobacco farm. By 10, he began helping his step-father mow lawns as part of the family’s weekend small business, Bud’s Service Lawn Cutting.  Cory graduated from Chopticon High School and attended Lees McRae College in the mountains of North Carolina. During his sophomore year, Cory transferred to Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore of Maryland so that he could play football while pursuing an ROTC Scholarship. While at Salisbury University, Cory earned his commission as an officer in the United States Army, and shortly after graduation, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned to Northern Virginia in 2013 and followed his step-father’s model of operating a successful owner-operator lawncare business to provide extra income while maintaining a full-time job as a technology recruiter. Cory continued to serve in the military through the National Guard and saw an opportunity to apply a military approach to the lawn care industry while providing an opportunity for his fellow service members the opportunity to earn extra income. After a few strategy brainstorming sessions with his childhood best friend, Patrick Moran in 2013. Tactical Solutions Lawn Care LLC was born.

Patrick Moran grew up in Alexandria, VA, spending his days exploring his Mother’s vegetable, herb, and flower, which grew over the years to fill up the neighboring lot. He loved being outside, something that holds true to today. In 2000, Patrick moved to St. Mary’s Maryland. There he spent his time exploring the banks of the Patuxent River. He personally witnessed the power of erosion as the Patuxent River shifted more than 20 ft towards their home in the 4 5 years, he, his mother, and sister lived there. After countless weekends, afternoons, and evenings exploring the shore, the marsh, and adjacent wood, Patrick too came to understand what a native plant and animal ecology can look like when able to thrive.

Patrick attended Chopticon High School where we met Cory Middleton. The two of them would go on to compete in football, wrestling, and track and field together. Patrick’s summers were spent completing internships at Pax River Naval Base and working at Meadow’s Farm Nursery. At Meadow’s, Patrick’s love for plants grew into a passion. He would rescue flowers, shrubs, and trees from the clearance section weekly, bringing them back to their home in Leonardtown, where he would design landscapes, hardscapes, and waterscapes around their acre and a half yard where the struggling plants could hopefully find a new home and take root.

Patrick graduated from Chopticon and went on to attend Yale University, intending to balance a college career playing Division I football, and obtaining a degree in Green Architecture. Once football started, Patrick’s focus shifted to cultivate his love of football with its physicality, time outdoors, team-environment and competitiveness. Patrick too shifted his academic curriculum to study Political Science, with focused coursework in the natural world and climate change. Meanwhile, he set a goal to follow his grandfather’s footsteps in playing professional football. Patrick graduated from Yale in 2011, only to see his NFL dream short-lived when he was released after Rookie Camp with the Baltimore Ravens. His NFL dreams may have been over, but they were soon after replaced with entrepreneurial fervor.

In 2012, Patrick founded Fitizen, 501c3 a non-profit committed to community-based holistic fitness. Through Fitizen, he oversaw the construction of a community garden in New Haven, CT and created community fitness programs that encouraged people to get active outdoors.

In 2013, Patrick settled back into Northern Virginia, where he eventually began working in IT Project Management at MicroTech, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business in Tysons Corner, VA, and then with Apollo, a health informatics company. By 2015, Patrick was ready to pursue other interests more aligned with his passions. He began providing consulting services through Moran Strategy Group, specializing in Lean Methodology, Business Performance Management and Start-Up Advisory Services, sharing lessons he learned through his professional experience running Fitizen and working at MicroTech and Apollo.

In 2015, Patrick and his future wife, Danielle Griffith founded Balance Paddleboarding, a social enterprise with a mission to improve the health of the Potomac River via Stand Up Paddleboarding. Today this company lives on offering outdoor experiences helping people restore their Balance with nature.

By 2016, it was time for Patrick and Cory to join forces again, becoming 50/50 partners in the business. Together they reignited Tactical Solutions Lawn Care LLC, which had gone into hibernation the year prior after providing primarily small residential maintenance services in Alexandria and Arlington. Soon after, Patrick began directing the day-to-day operations, bringing his professional experience as a Project Manager (PMP) and business consultant. This operational experience, paired with his passion for the outdoors, resulted in the notable growth of the business. In 2017, Cory pursued other interests and sold his stake in the partnership to Patrick, who continued to manage Tactical’s operations and oversee its evolution and growth.

In 2017, Patrick obtained Virginia licenses as a Class C Landscape Services Contractor (LSC), Home Improvement Contractor (HIC), followed by a Maryland Home Improvement Contractor (MHIC) contractor in 2018, which enabled Tactical Land Care to build upon its successful performance in landscape maintenance services to develop greater experience and skill in landscape construction projects.

In 2018, the company rebranded to become Tactical Land Care (TLC), to better reflect the team’s commitment to fighting climate, while paying homage to the organization’s history and the culture that grew from its founding as a Veteran-Owned Small Business.

Today, TLC leads the way in offering environmentally responsible landscape design, construction, and maintenance services, marked by Patrick obtaining his LEED Green Associate designation in 2019.

We take enormous pride in our ability to helping homeowners and business owners optimize their properties to maximize their environmental benefit. Through thoughtful design and service, TLC strives to maximize soil carbon sequestration, mitigate stormwater runoff, and optimize energy efficiency.
